We're big on costumes here in New Orleans -- especially during Mardi Gras. My first year here, I didn't have a clue how to "do" carnival. We lived in the Broadmoor (way off the parade route and terribly inconvenient, I was a first year PhD student and didn't get that work could (and should!) wait, and didn't understand that carnival was essentially one really long awesome colorful tailgate. My second year, I was pregnant and still concealing it. My third year, I was breastfeeding and still feeling baby fatty. This year, I tried a little harder.
Behold my homemade tutu, three ways:
Endymion Saturday: Michael Stars tank, Target tights, and chucks
Bacchus Sunday: Corset from H&M, Matt Bernson ankle strap ballet flats, Peacock headband made from a plume purchased at Michael's.
Mardi Gras day: American Apparel bathing suit. Notice the tutu gets progressively more ratty. Also, it rained on us. Which explains the hair.
A carnival tutu is pretty standard; next year, I'll be more creative. And I'll dress my baby up more, too. Not that he needed it - he got so many throws from just being little and cute.
