Powerful
I've nursed Henry in public many times. But I've also felt obligated to do it in awkward places, like the backseat of my car, and yes, bathroom stalls. I've done the latter because I felt more comfortable there than the alternative - because I didn't enjoy the weird, condemning, and otherwise judgy looks I'd received in the past from complete strangers. Breastfeeding is beautiful and beneficial. I don't ever breastfeed in public now, because Henry only nurses in the morning and at night (yes, I practice extended breastfeeding - a whole other controversial conversation, but if you want to, bring it. The positive evidence is there). When I see ladies doing it in public, I smile inside, and if I catch their eye, I smile at them. This brave lady pretty much says it all.

I didn't nurse Maddox in public once. It made our outdoor lives so much more complicated than it needed to be, but I just couldn't get over being embarrassed about it. I vowed to myself I would take the leap with Quinn and am proud to report I've nursed in public many times with him. And once or twice without a nursing cover (that was a whole different level of nerve wracking, but so empowering!). Kuddos to you for still nursing Henry! Maddox self-weaned at 17 months, which was too early for me but apparently the perfect time for him. :)
ReplyDeleteProud of you for nursing him in public! I went to a La Leche league meeting the other day and we all talked about the first time we nursed in public and I thought of you. I want to hear about you doing it without a cover - again, incredibly proud of you! Yeah, we're doing the baby-led weaning thing and from what I can see, he's not leading us away from nursing anytime soon. I don't mind at all. I love it, and doing morning and night nursing only minorly inconveniences my life. In fact, the morning session buys me a solid 15 more minutes of sleep, which is always welcome!
