Creating a Carnivore

Why did Henry have a 5-course meal for dinner while I slurped ramen noodles?

Seriously.  He had: zucchini carrot bread (homemade, thank you very much), macaroni and cheese (with broccoli hidden within, which Henry successfully picked through), mashed Hawaiian yams with milk and sugar (shunned immediately - these purple babies didn't stand a chance despite the fact that they are delicious), ground pork sauteed in butter (which eventually found it's way mixed into...) chicken noodle organic baby food (baby food is always my last resort).

Phew.

By the time I put Henry to bed, I was not in any kind of creative mood for myself.  For the record, I did throw some spinach into my pathetic soup, so it wasn't completely unhealthy.  Seeing as tonight is one of those rare nights that B needed to stay late at work, leaving me to my own devices, this was all I could throw together.

This kind of routine might sound crazy, but we are determined to build up this little guy's appetite.  Besides his cute round belly, Henry is skinny and needs some meat on his bones - literally!  We are successful with some protein like cheeses, scrambled eggs, and beans.  But I'd like him to eat more chicken, pork, beef, etc. since that is a large part of mine and B's regular diet and I want him to eat what we eat.

Moms and creative cooks out there -- advice?

  1. Welcome to toddler-hood-- they are notoriously picky eaters. Maddox can spot broccoli hidden in cheese a mile away. We find that eating together and giving Maddox the same food we are eating really helps. He tends to be more picky when we feed him something special or if he is eating by himself. We try and do dinner together, and he just gets what we are having... it usually works, but he still won't touch green veggies. We figure if we keep giving them to him, he'll have to eat them someday... ;)

  2. The fact that M won't touch green veggies makes me feel tons better. The three of us try to eat together but one of us always ends up abandoning their plate and shuffling different foods Henry's way (and then eventually spoon-feeding him). We are inching our way towards H eating what we eat. But it's so hard. I swear he laughed at the bok choy and rice we tried to give him yesterday, haha.

  3. Actually, the FOUR of us eat together - Gus has gained 5-10 lbs since Henry started eating finger foods.

  4. I really lucked out and Izzy never has been a picky eater. He eats chicken, beef and shrimp. He loves beans and eggs too. I just make sure to cut it up small and let him feed himself. Plus if he sees me or Marshall eat ANYTHING he must have it. So if it is something new I am not sure he would like. I pretend like I am not going to give him any. Then he sees me eat it and immediately wants some too. That is when we head to the highchair. He will not eat lettuce though. That one is a fail. But I think it is a chewing/texture issue.
